four golf majors

HELP!! HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENT on 1997 Volkswagon Golf?

My exsisting headlight has a major crack and there is glass floating around in there. Headlamps only last for a few days.
I was told by my mechanic to buy a used Headlight and replace it myself.
Since then, I’ve had about four people look at this darn thing. No one can figure out how to get the exsisting light off. The screws look pretty nasty too – seized and damaged.
It looks like the grill may also have to come off to access some of the assembly (a major project for us rookies).
My questions are:
1. Can I do this myself if I find/buy the proper manual?
2. Should I take the part to the mechanic and ask him to install since it was his idea? (I know taking your own parts into the shop is frowned upon).
3. Any other ideas?
